Sahara, montañas del Atlas y Anti-Atlas

The first tour in the calendar and by far the most asked for. We leave on 20 September 2026 with twelve days in which Morocco shows every one of its faces: the wet green of the Rif, the imperial medinas, the cedars of the Middle Atlas, the red gorges of the south and, at the end, the silence of the dunes. We follow the Motonest route already settled for Morocco — a well-run circuit built around the roads worth riding, not the kilometres that have to be covered. Balanced riding days, high passes in the morning, long stops where the place asks for them. Four editions ride this route: September 2026, May 2027, late May 2027 and September 2027. At ten days the spring editions are a little more concentrated than the twelve-day September one; the structure stays, the number of nights per stage changes.

    On the route

    What we see in Morocco.

The landmarks of the classic Motonest route, north to south. These are the points the circuit is built around — the same for all four editions in the calendar.

    The backbone of the route
    1. Rif
    2. Fès
    3. Middle Atlas
    4. Ziz Valley
    5. Erg Chebbi
    6. Todra
    7. Dadès
    8. Ouarzazate
    9. High Atlas
    10. Marrakech

The north — Rif and the imperial cities

    01 — 04
    • 01
      Chefchaouen

The blue town, hung on the slopes of the Rif. Every wall of the medina painted a different shade of indigo. The most photographed stop of the tour.

    • 02
      Fès el-BaliUNESCO

The largest inhabited medina in the world — nine thousand car-free lanes. The Chouara tanneries, unchanged for close to a thousand years.

    • 03
Ifrane and the cedars of Azrou

"The Switzerland of Morocco", with pitched roofs and mountain air, then the forest of ancient cedars where the Barbary macaques live.

    • 04
      The Middle Atlas

High plateaus, volcanic lakes and the first serious switchbacks. Here the landscape changes completely — and so does the temperature.

The south — Ziz, the Sahara and the great gorges

    05 — 10
    • 05
      The Ziz Valley

The descent to the desert through the most beautiful palm corridor in Morocco — a green streak tens of kilometres long between walls of burnt rock.

    • 06
      Erg Chebbi · Merzouga

The big dunes, up to 150 metres high. A night in camp at the edge of the sand, sunrise over the crests. The emotional high point of the tour.

    • 07
      Rissani and Erfoud

The last town before the Sahara: the Friday souk, the old caravan routes and plateaus full of marine fossils 400 million years old.

    • 08
      The Todra Gorge

Vertical walls of over 300 metres that close to ten metres apart. You ride in at idle, in shadow and echo.

    • 09
      The Dadès Gorge

The "monkey fingers" switchbacks — the most spectacular set of hairpins in Morocco, looking back over the whole canyon.

    • 10
      The Valley of the Roses

Kelaat M'Gouna and the damask-rose oases between Dadès and Ouarzazate — a valley of impossible green in the middle of the stone.

The High Atlas and the way back

    11 — 14
    • 11
      Aït Ben HaddouUNESCO

The mud-brick ksar above the Ounila river, the best-known film set in North Africa. You climb from the bottom to the granary at the top.

    • 12
      Ouarzazate

The gate of the desert: the Taourirt kasbah and the Atlas studios, where films have been shot since Lawrence of Arabia.

    • 13
      Tizi n'Tichka · 2,260 m

The great pass of the High Atlas, completely rebuilt — new asphalt and tens of kilometres of wide bends above the clouds.

    • 14
      Marrakech

The finish: Jemaa el-Fna at sunset, the souks, the gardens and the first cold beer after twelve days of dust.

The selection and order of the landmarks differ from one edition to the next, with the length of the tour, the direction of the circuit and conditions on the ground. This describes the base route, not a day-by-day itinerary. The final order of days and stops is confirmed at the tour briefing; road conditions in the Atlas and access to the dunes can force changes on the spot — the guide always decides.

    September 2027 · special edition

    Morocco with Friends.

In September 2027 we return to Morocco with a special edition. This time there are two groups and two guides: one brings together friends and riders we have travelled with before, the other is open to anyone joining us for the first time, less experienced riders included. The idea is simple — Morocco lived among friends, whatever your level. Same classic route, same landmarks.

    How two groups work

    • A
      Group 1 · Motonest riders

Riders we have shared the road with before. A committed pace, longer stages, more easy off-road where the route allows it.

    • B
      Group 2 · Open

Open to anyone, first long tour included. A more relaxed pace, more frequent breaks, the same places — without the pressure of keeping up with somebody.

    • C
      One route, shared evenings

Both groups ride the same circuit and meet at the same accommodation. You ride apart, you dine together.

Groups are assigned at sign-up, together with the guides, by riding experience and preferred pace. It can change during the tour. The open group is designed for riders with less experience. Exact dates and places per group: on this page, when announced.
